EMBRACE® ACTIVE SCAR DEFENSE
Treating and minimizing scars can be tricky. Questions inevitably come up.
If you don’t see your question answered below, here’s how you can contact us:
embrace® Active Scar Defense is the first scar management product of its kind. The two part device includes a patented self-applicator and a silicone dressing. Once applied over the forming scar, embrace® relieves the natural tension that exists during the skin’s healing process–effectively treating the primary culprit of scarring.
Unlike cheaper scar treatments, embrace® is proven to successfully alter the outcome of scar formation by treating the root cause. Clinically proven in multiple Level 1, peer reviewed, randomized controlled trials, embrace® has been used successfully on 11,000 patients to date. Not only is embrace® reported as 2x less painful than other options, but 92% of the time patients and physicians rated scars treated with embrace® as better or much better than untreated scars.
It is recommended to apply embrace® 1-4 weeks after suture removal on a closed, dry incision, where no scabs are present and worn for approximately 8 weeks (about 2 months). For newly formed scars, treatment with embrace® can be initiated up to 6 months post-surgery. If you scar easily or have a history of keloid scarring, embrace® should be worn for 12 weeks or longer.
How It Works
Yes. The embrace® device (patented applicator + silicone dressing) is FDA-cleared and clinically proven to be safe and effective in the most rigorous Level 1 clinical studies. Embrace incorporates the restorative properties of 100% Medical Grade silicone into this one-of-a-kind scar treatment. Silicone therapy is proven effective to soften, flatten and fade by hydrating scar tissue while healing- a perfect finish to the embrace® 3-step formula.
embrace® dressings are water-resistant and can be worn during normal everyday activities like showering. However, you should not submerge the dressings in water for an extended period of time as embrace® is not waterproof.
Minor side effects can include:
- Skin irritation or redness
- Allergic reaction
- Infection, pain, and/or fever
Any surgical tape or adhesive skin dressing may irritate the skin upon removal, depending on your skin’s sensitivity. This redness or slight irritation will typically clear during the 12-24 hour break we recommend between applications. Some irritation and redness is normal around the edges of the dressing. If this happens, reposition it slightly higher or lower to avoid direct contact with the irritation when applying the next dressing.
If you are using embrace® after a surgery and your scar starts to open or ooze, or if you have an allergic reaction, remove the dressing and consult your physician.
If you have questions or experience any of the above side effects, we can help. Please call 855-NOSCAR2 (855.667.2272) for immediate product support.

We recommend applying at night, at least 2 hours before going to bed. This will provide time for the pressure sensitive adhesive of the dressing to fully adhere to your skin.
Remove embrace® the day/evening prior to your next dressing change or appointment, or when the edges begin to lift, an average of 10 days after application.
Certain applications or environments may require more frequent changes due to high mobility, cleansing routine, hair growth, humidity or oil level on the skin.
- It is helpful to remove the dressing in the shower using warm water and soap.
- Gently peel the dressing back at 180°, rolling it back upon itself. Use the other hand to apply slight pressure on your skin as you remove the dressing. If any adhesive remains, remove it with an oil based product such as baby oil.
- Do not apply any lotions or ointments to the area, and keep hairs in the bikini area trimmed.
- Allow skin to rest for 12 to 24 hours before reapplying.
Yes, the dressing is occlusive, which means the dressing is closed over the skin. Your skin is still breathing underneath the dressing and this is how air pockets occur. Wrinkles are the dressing conforming to your skin and occur due to the nature of wearing a dressing on your skin for 7-10 days. As long as the edges of the dressing are still fully adhered, embrace® is still doing its job and offloading the tension.
Yes, condensation is completely normal and often occurs after taking a shower or strenuous activity. If the edge of the dressing is not fully sealed and a water pocket has formed inside the dressing, it is time to remove embrace.
When the edges of the dressing begins to lift, this indicates it is time to remove embrace. This typically occurs 7-10 days post application. Follow the embrace® removal instructions and allow a 12-24 hour break before re-applying embrace®.
Yes, embrace® is clear, thin, lightweight, and easy to wear. Patients have reported that embrace® provides added support and enhanced comfort during the healing process. In fact, clinical trials 96% of the time patient rated the embrace® scar as comfortable to wear.*
After application, a minor wrinkly or wavy appearance in the dressing is normal. Should this happen, apply pressure and hold the affected area to the skin for 30-60 seconds. Use hands and fingers to help smooth out and release any air pockets.
A wavy/wrinkly appearance is OK and dressing is still effective. Redoing the application is NOT necessary.
If you have any questions about the application process, please refer to the full Instructions for Use; or call 855-NOSCAR2 (855.667.2272) for immediate product support.

You cannot completely prevent and avoid scars. However, the 2014 Scar Management Practical Guidelines state: The #1 major component of scar prevention immediately after wound closure is tension relief. In addition, clinical studies have shown that by creating a low tension environment after surgery, you can dramatically improve the appearance of scars. embrace’s unique stress shield technology relieves tension and therefore proactively minimizes scar formation, helping to prevent scarring before it starts.
For scars older than 6 months, treat with embrace MINIMIZE. Made with patented Stress-Shield™ Technology + 100% medical grade silicone, embrace MINIMIZE™ protects and hydrates the scar site, helping to improve the scar’s appearance and texture in as little as 4 weeks.
